The list below organizes the installed signs based on the general area where they are located. The list is presented in alphabetical order based on the location.

NOTE:  Due to GPS accuracy variations, “Seconds” are rounded and may not match subsequent readings exactly.  Designations are degrees minutes seconds.

NOTE:  Sign locations organized by the BMRR Branch they are on also are shown in the Self-guided Driving and Walking Tour for a specific branch.  Sign locations in those self-guided tours are designated with “[SIGN]” beside the location/stop on the tour.  Click here to go to the self-guided tours that have been created thus far.

NOTE:  Sign numbers reflect the order in which the signs were installed.  Such numbers are for reference purposes to track to other lists.

THE FOLLOWING SIGNS HAVE BEEN PLACED AT APPROPRIATE FACILITIES AND MUSEUMS THAT FEATURE THE BMRR OR THAT HAVE A CONNECTION TO ITS HISTORY  (See next list for all other sign locations):

142. Sign Location:  Nashville, Tennessee — in historic train room maintained by Steven D. Johnson and near the Nashville-Memphis former NC&St.L line (Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis).  The BMRR used a portion of the NC&St.L tracks to connect from Moragne, Alabama, to Attalla, Alabama, beginning in 1905.

143. Sign Location:  Chattanooga, Tennessee — The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum has been presented with a BMRR sign to place in its Center for Southeastern Railroad Research.  This not only will add to its research collection but also will preserve the BMRR sign in its archives.  Address:  4119 Cromwell Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37421

144. Sign Location:  Trussville, Alabama — The Trussville History Museum has a display of the BMRR and the role it played in Trussville’s history including serving the blast furnace in downtown Trussville.  A BMRR sign has been provided as part of that display of historic information.  Address:  91 South Mall, Trussville, Alabama.  Latitude/Longitude:  N 33 37 42  W 86 36 19

146. Sign Location:  Birmingham, Alabama — in a person’s signs collection that features local history.

168. Sign Location:  Helena — Old Town Helena  (Kenneth R. Penhale City of Helena Museum, 5260 Helena Road, Helena, Alabama 35080)  The history museum is within sight of the active train tracks that still use the former BMRR roadbed.  A restored mining tram car is on display in the museum parking lot, and many mining and railroad artifacts are on display inside the museum.  Latitude/Longitude:  N 33 17 41  W 86 50 36  BMRR Branch:  Helena and Blocton Branch

171. Sign Location:  Fultondale, Alabama — The Mayor of Fultondale is gathering historical material and artifacts in a room in the Mayor’s Office for possible future display in a Fultondale history museum. 183. Sign Location:  Remlap, Alabama (near former Village Springs, Alabama) — on private property where original Lehigh Branch ran from Huntsville Branch No. 2 to local mines.  The former BMRR Lehigh Branch roadbed is still in place on this private property.  BMRR Branch:  Lehigh Branch (Huntsville Branch No. 2)

186. Sign Location:  Gardendale — Kermit E. Dooley Gardendale Historical Museum.  A BMRR sign has been provided for display in the museum.  The Cain Creek Branch of the BMRR ran through part of Gardendale, and BMRR signs have been installed at two of those locations.   Address:  125 J.D. 197. Sign Location:  Mountain Brook, Alabama — in personal model train layout room.  This is located about 3 blocks from where the BMRR Red Gap Branch ran until it was abandoned and the tracks were removed in 1954.  Also nearby are two pyramid hip roof houses that date from the mining period when this area was industrial before it became residential.  BMRR Branch:  Red Gap Branch

Bessemer, Alabama

120. Sign Location:  3rd Avenue North and 20th Street North, Bessemer.  HISTORIC LOCATION:  This sign is at the corner of the block (now a warehouse parking lot) where was located the BMRR Passenger Station and the BMRR Freight House next to it.  The currently active CSX railroad tracks that run along the northeast side of the parking lot are on the original BMRR roadbed.  The original BMRR mile post (Mile 403) can be seen alongside the tracks behind the warehouse building.  Latitude/Longitude:  N 33 24 13.92  W 86 57 9.50  BMRR Branch:  North Branch.  NOTE:  The BMRR South Branch also used this location to reach the Blue Creek Junction, so some documentation shows both branches running along here on the same tracks from the Brickyard WYE to the Blue Creek Junction (WYE).

192. Sign Location:  Bessemer — 21st Street North.  HISTORIC LOCATION:  The currently active CSX railroad tracks near this sign are on the original BMRR roadbed.  The original BMRR mile post (Mile 403) can be seen alongside the tracks at this location.  Latitude/Longitude:  N 33 24 15.93  W 86 57 3.947  BMRR Branch:  North Branch.  NOTE:  The BMRR South Branch also used this location to reach the Blue Creek Junction, so some documentation shows both branches running along here on the same tracks from the Brickyard WYE to the Blue Creek Junction (WYE).

121. Sign Location:  Powder Plant Road at crossing of CSX active tracks, Bessemer.  Sign is located north of the CSX tracks and just before the bridge over Valley Creek.  Latitude/Longitude:  N 33 23 21.59  W 87  0  38.92  BMRR Branch:  Blue Creek Extension.

123. 124. Sign Location:  14th Street across the street from intersection of Avenue J, Bessemer.  Sign is located at the terminus (abutment in the edge of the woods) of the BMRR bridge over the former Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) tracks.  Latitude/Longitude:  N 33 23 12.84  W 86  56  38.15.   BMRR Branch:  Reeder’s Gap Branch running off of the South Branch.   NOTE:  Current spelling of the gap is “Readers”.

Birmingham — Red Mountain Park

111. Sign Location:  Red Mountain Park — South Trail.  THIS IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN!  The first rails of the BMRR were laid in 1884 as the BMRR South Branch in present-day Red Mountain Park.  The Park has named the trail that is on the BMRR South Branch roadbed the “BMRR South Trail.”  This sign location commemorates the beginning of the BMRR and illustrates that parts of its original roadbed are still in use as walking trails.  Latitude/Longitude:  N 33 26 51.51  W 86 51 56.88   BMRR Branch:  South Branch

110. Sign Location:  Lance Way deadend at Lizard Loop Trail of Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve.  A great thing about the location of this sign is that it is directly above a great cut-stone culvert that was part of the BMRR roadbed and that CONTINUES to carry water through it after 128 years of use!!  The downstream end of that culvert has the biggest stones yet found in these BMRR culverts.  Also, the BMRR sign is attached to an old BMRR railroad rail (section of track) that had been re-purposed and had been installed vertically as an end-of-street barrier.   Latitude/Longitude:  N 33 34 8.58  W 86 41 20  BMRR Branch:  Gate City Branch Extension to Trussville
